The Ultimate Fall Road Trip to Superior, Arizona
There’s a moment every year when Arizona seems to exhale.
The blazing days of summer begin to soften. Mornings turn crisp. Hiking boots come back out of the closet. Patios become irresistible again, and the desert light takes on that unmistakable golden glow.
In Superior, this is the beginning of one of the best seasons of the year.
And unlike destinations where autumn arrives in a blaze of color and disappears a few weeks later, fall in central Arizona likes to linger. Here, beautiful outdoor weather can stretch through October, November and well into December. In fact, some of our winter days might feel a whole lot like fall to visitors arriving from colder parts of the country.
So roll down the windows, cue up your road-trip playlist and point the car toward the mountains. Here’s how to spend a perfect fall getaway in Superior.
Morning: Take the Road Less Ordinary
Part of the fun is simply getting here.
As you leave the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas behind and head toward Superior, subdivisions give way to wide-open Sonoran Desert, rugged mountains and towering saguaros.
Then the dramatic silhouette of Picketpost Mountain appears on the horizon—a pretty good indication that your weekend has officially begun.
Fall is an especially rewarding time to make the drive. Cooler temperatures invite you to slow down, spend more time outside and turn what could be a simple day trip into a full-fledged desert escape.
First Stop: Find Fall Color at Boyce Thompson Arboretum
If there is one place that belongs at the center of a Superior fall road trip, it is Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden takes on a completely different personality as the seasons change.
Cottonwoods, sycamores, pistachios and other deciduous trees bring splashes of yellow, gold, orange and red to a landscape surrounded by desert plants, towering rock formations and the cliffs of Queen Creek Canyon. The contrast is spectacular—and uniquely Arizona.
And don't assume you've missed fall even as we move towards the end of the year. Some of the Arboretum's most beautiful seasonal color can arrive surprisingly late, making November and early December particularly rewarding times to visit.
Give yourself at least a couple of hours here. Wander the trails beneath the trees, cross the suspension bridge, bring your camera and find a quiet spot to simply enjoy being outside again.
From October through March, the Arboretum is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the final admission one hour before closing. It also brings back seasonal programming as temperatures cool, including bird walks and guided discovery tours.
Fall trip tip: Check the Arboretum calendar before you go. Its 2026 fall schedule includes everything from the annual Fall Plant Sale to watercolor classes, family fall-color programs, bird walks and forest bathing.
Midday: Follow the Road into Historic Superior
After a morning among the trees, continue into town.
Superior's historic downtown is exactly the kind of place a road trip should lead you: compact, colorful and easy to explore without an agenda.
Park the car and wander.
Step inside locally owned shops and galleries. Look for vintage treasures and handmade finds. Admire the murals and historic architecture. Grab lunch at one of Superior's local restaurants and give yourself permission not to rush.
That's one of fall's great luxuries here. When temperatures drop, exploring town becomes part of the experience rather than a dash from one air-conditioned building to another.
And if you're lucky enough to arrive on a weekend when something is happening on Main Street, stick around. Superior's calendar fills with community events, markets and festivals throughout the year, including the increasingly quirky Superior Hee-Haw Hustle Burro Race fall event, when runners and their burro partners race from historic Main Street onto the surrounding trails.
Afternoon: Pick Your Adventure
This is where the itinerary can go in a few different directions.
If you came to hike, fall is prime time to hit the trails around Superior. The surrounding mountains and desert offer everything from approachable walks to serious adventures, with Picketpost Mountain creating a dramatic backdrop almost everywhere you look.
If you came to wander, stay downtown a little longer. Order something sweet, browse another shop, find a patio and enjoy the fact that you can finally sit outside in the middle of the afternoon.
And if you're happiest behind the wheel, simply continue exploring. Superior sits within a landscape made for scenic drives, where winding roads reveal mountain passes, desert vistas and dramatically changing terrain.
The point isn't to check everything off a list. Fall is the season to linger.
Golden Hour: Don't Leave Yet
This may be the most important piece of advice in this entire itinerary:
Do not rush back to the city before sunset.
Late afternoon transforms the mountains around Superior. Rock faces glow. Long shadows stretch across the desert. Saguaros turn into silhouettes against the sky, and on the right evening, Arizona delivers one of those sunsets that stops conversation altogether.
Find a place to slow down and watch it happen.
Better still, stay the night.
Evening: Turn the Day Trip Into a Getaway
Superior may sit within easy road-trip distance of the Valley, but there is a completely different feeling that comes with waking up here.
Instead of battling evening traffic home, check into one of Superior's lodging options, enjoy dinner in town and spend the evening beneath a desert sky.
Cool fall nights are made for this.
And once you've stayed overnight, something else happens: tomorrow morning becomes part of the trip.
Day Two: Coffee, Breakfast & One More Trail
Wake up to cool mountain air, grab breakfast or coffee and squeeze in one more outdoor adventure before heading home.
Maybe that means another trail.
Maybe it's a second visit downtown.
Maybe it's simply sitting somewhere in the morning sunshine and realizing you aren't quite ready to leave.
That's okay.
Superior tends to have that effect.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Superior in Fall?
The answer depends a little on what kind of fall you're chasing.
October ushers in cooler temperatures and the return of prime outdoor recreation weather.
November brings crisp mornings, comfortable afternoons and increasing fall color at Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
And late November into December can deliver some of the most beautiful seasonal scenes of all—especially at the Arboretum—while much of the rest of the country is already firmly in winter.
Around here, the seasons operate on Arizona time.
